Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Jawhar Sircar announced his resignation from his parliamentary position on Sunday, citing dissatisfaction with the West Bengal government’s handling of the Kolkata doctor rape and murder case. In a two-page letter addressed to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Sircar expressed his intent to step down from his role as an MP, underscoring the administrative missteps taken in the case.
In an exclusive conversation with News18, Sircar explained that he felt compelled to take an extraordinary step to capture Banerjee’s attention. “I had no other option but to take this unusual step. I needed to highlight the gravity of the situation,” Sircar said.

Addressing allegations of corruption within the party, Sircar noted that the ongoing protests against the government’s handling of the case are indicative of broader dissatisfaction. “The case of Abahaya has triggered widespread outrage, and protests have been ongoing for over a month. Sircar also acknowledged the public perception of corruption within the TMC. “Corruption is apparent to everyone, even my driver comments on how wealthy even the lower-tier members of the party have become. I felt it was necessary to address this openly. If corrective action is not taken soon, the situation will worsen. It is essential to curb communal forces,” he added.
Sources revealed that Mamata Banerjee reached out to Sircar on Sunday evening, but the conversation did not sway his decision. “Yes, she spoke to me on various matters today, but my decision remains unchanged,” Sircar confirmed.
Highlighting the failures of the administration in the handling of the rape and murder case, Sircar criticized the lack of decisive action. “The hospital, police, and state administration have all failed. The steps taken so far have been inadequate and delayed,
