The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced this decision, emphasizing that the 41-year-old athlete embodies the unity and spirit of the Indian contingent as they prepare to compete on the global Olympic stage.
In another significant appointment, legendary boxer MC Mary Kom has been named the chef de mission of India’s contingent. Mary Kom, a six-time World Champion and bronze medallist at the 2012 London Olympics, will be supported by luger Shiva Keshavan, who assumes the role of deputy chef de mission. The IOA cited Mary Kom’s unparalleled dedication to sports and inspirational journey as key factors in her selection for this crucial leadership position. Meanwhile, Keshavan, a former Olympian in luge, brings valuable experience and knowledge to support the management and coordination efforts of the team.
Gagan Narang, an Olympic bronze medallist in rifle shooting, will oversee India’s operations at the shooting range, which is situated some distance away from the main venues. With India boasting its largest-ever shooting contingent for the Paris Games, Narang’s meticulous approach and understanding of athletes’ needs are expected to create a conducive environment for their performance.
