At a campaign rally in Amravati, Maharashtra, NCP (SP) leader Sharad Pawar expressed apprehensions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, drawing comparisons to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Sharad Pawar criticized PM Modi for focusing on criticism rather than highlighting his government’s achievements over the past decade.
Addressing the crowd in support of a Maha Vikas Aghadi candidate, Sharad Pawar emphasized the significant contributions of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to India’s development, asserting that Nehru’s legacy cannot be disregarded.
Sharad Pawar cautioned against the rise of autocracy in India, citing concerns about certain BJP leaders openly discussing changes to the Constitution. He urged voters to prevent the consolidation of autocratic tendencies in the country.
The campaign rally in Amravati precedes a highly contested election in the Lok Sabha constituency, with the BJP fielding Navneet Rana, the incumbent MP, against Congress candidate Balwant Wankhede.
Reflecting on past electoral decisions, Sharad Pawar acknowledged a “mistake” in supporting Rana in the 2019 elections and sought to rectify it by endorsing Wankhede’s candidacy. Wankhede, representing Congress, is part of the tripartite Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance.
Drawing on his experience with various prime ministers, Sharad Pawar highlighted their efforts to shape a new India, contrasting it with Modi’s penchant for criticism without highlighting governmental accomplishments.
Expressing concerns about Modi’s leadership style, Sharad Pawar warned of a potential authoritarian regime emerging in India, likening Modi’s approach to that of Putin in Russia.
Sharad Pawar commended Shiv Sena (UBT) under Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership for its commitment to protecting national interests through collaboration with Congress and NCP (SP) within the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance.
