The Indian badminton contingent, including top names like PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, and Chirag Shetty, has arrived at the Olympic Village in Paris ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics. As athletes from around the world gather in the French capital, the excitement and anticipation for the Games are palpable.
The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics is scheduled for July 26, with the badminton events kicking off the following day. India, aiming for its fourth consecutive Olympic medal in badminton, has high hopes pinned on its star players.
One of the highlights of the Olympic experience for many athletes is the chance to meet and interact with international superstars. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy seized this opportunity by posing for a photograph with Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal. Satwiksairaj Satwiksairaj Rankireddy shared the moment on his Instagram story, captioning it “With the beast,” alongside the 22-time Grand Slam champion and two-time Olympic gold medallist.
Reflecting on past Olympics, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy’s men’s doubles partner, Chirag Shetty, had a similar moment at the Tokyo Olympics, where he took a photo with Serbian tennis great Novak Djokovic. Djokovic, who was chasing his first Olympic gold and aiming to complete a rare Golden Slam that year, ultimately fell short, losing in the semifinals and the bronze medal match. Interestingly, the Indian athletes who posed with Djokovic, including Chirag and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, faced their own challenges, with the pair being knocked out in the group stage of men’s doubles.
However, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Shetty have arrived in Paris with renewed vigor and stronger prospects. They are among the top contenders for a medal, bolstered by their recent performances and the experience gained from past competitions.
India’s quest for badminton glory at the Olympics began with Saina Nehwal, who won a bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympics, becoming the first Indian badminton player to achieve this feat. PV Sindhu continued the legacy, securing a silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics and a bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The current Indian contingent is keen to build on this legacy and add more medals to the nation’s tally.
As the Games draw nearer, the Indian badminton players, alongside their compatriots, are focused and determined, ready to take on the world’s best and bring pride to the nation.
