Tensions between Russia and Ukraine have intensified yet again as Moscow broke its silence following Ukraine’s large-scale drone attacks on five military airfields. The strikes, carried out on Sunday, targeted airbases in Murmansk, Irkutsk, Ivanovo, Ryazan, and Amur regions using FPV (First Person View) drones. While Russia claimed to have successfully repelled some of the attacks, it admitted damage to aircraft in Murmansk and Irkutsk, although it did not specify the extent of losses.
Drone Attacks and Moscow’s Response
According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, the Ukrainian government orchestrated what it described as a “terrorist attack” against strategic military sites. Official reports, cited by Russian news agency TASS, claimed that the drone assaults in the Ivanovo, Ryazan, and Amur regions were thwarted without any casualties among civilians or military personnel. However, several aircraft were reportedly set ablaze in the Murmansk and Irkutsk regions, and the fires have since been extinguished.
Despite these acknowledgments, the Kremlin has not disclosed how many aircraft were destroyed or the type of aircraft involved. Russian authorities added that individuals suspected of coordinating the attacks have been detained.
Diplomatic Outreach Amid Tensions
As the military conflict deepens, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in talks to address possible paths toward peace. The discussion came just ahead of the scheduled Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul. Lavrov’s ministry noted that the Ukraine conflict and multiple initiatives for conflict resolution, including direct negotiations, were discussed during the exchange.
Rubio emphasized President Donald Trump’s continued support for direct dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv to reach a lasting peace settlement. The U.S. also expressed concern over the rising civilian toll and condemned recent explosions that destroyed two bridges in Russian border regions. These blasts killed at least seven people and injured nearly 70, prompting Russia to announce a full investigation.
While the Kremlin has vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice, it continues to frame Ukraine’s drone strategy as part of a broader campaign of cross-border terrorism. The international community now watches closely as diplomatic conversations proceed alongside a backdrop of escalating hostilities.
