The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) has successfully evacuated the crew of one of its ships following a severe flooding incident caused by a collision with an underwater object off the coast of Johor state. The incident occurred on Sunday, leading to a partial sinking of the vessel and prompting a coordinated rescue and salvage operation.
According to an RMN statement, the ship began leaking around noon, with the problem first detected in the engine room. The leak, which was initially manageable, quickly escalated as the flooding spread uncontrollably throughout the vessel. Despite the crew’s best efforts to contain the situation and stabilize the ship, the flooding proved too extensive to control.
The vessel was operating two nautical miles southeast of Tanjung Penyusop when the collision occurred. All 39 crew members were safely rescued following the failure to manage the leak and stabilize the ship. The RMN has confirmed that the crew was recovered without any reported injuries, and the focus has now shifted to a salvage operation to recover the partially submerged ship.
In response to the incident, the RMN has announced the formation of a special investigative board tasked with determining the cause of the collision and subsequent flooding. This investigative body will work to uncover the details of how the underwater object came into contact with the vessel and evaluate any lapses in protocol or equipment failure.
Several agencies have responded to the emergency, including the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, local police, and maritime organizations in the area. Their collective efforts were instrumental in the swift and safe evacuation of the crew.
The RMN has advised the public to refrain from speculating about the incident and to rely on official sources for the most accurate and up-to-date information. The naval authorities are committed to providing further details as the investigation progresses and more information becomes available.
The incident highlights the risks faced by naval operations and the importance of maintaining stringent safety measures and operational readiness. As the salvage operation continues, the RMN remains focused on addressing the immediate concerns and ensuring the safety of maritime operations in the region.
