India’s skipper Rohit Sharma delivered a sensational match-winning century in the second ODI against England, guiding his team to a four-wicket victory and securing an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Rohit, who had been under scrutiny for his recent form, responded in the best way possible, smashing a 90-ball 119, decorated with 12 fours and seven sixes. Despite the external chatter about his form and future, the seasoned batter remained unfazed, calling his century “just another day in the office.”
Having endured a lean patch in ODIs since October 2023, Rohit’s last century in the format came after a prolonged phase where he had managed five half-centuries in 13 matches. Across formats, this was his first ton since March 2024, when he scored 104 against England in Dharamsala. However, his struggles in Tests, where he crossed fifty just once in eight games since October 2024 against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia, had sparked conversations about his longevity at the highest level.
Rohit, however, shrugged off the discussions about his form, asserting that he remains committed to giving his best on the field every time he steps out. Speaking after the match, he emphasized that his mindset remains unchanged despite ups and downs in performances. “In my mind, it was just about doing things that I do, trying to bat the way I do. I have been here long enough… one or two knocks are not going to change my mind or the way I bat,” he said. He remained composed about his performance and reiterated that scoring runs is not always as easy as it may seem, even for seasoned players.
His century played a crucial role in India’s successful chase, setting the foundation for the team’s dominance in the series. Reflecting on his innings, Rohit highlighted the importance of sticking to one’s approach, even during rough patches. “When you have scored so many runs, you have done something right. You just need to get back to that mindset of knowing how to get runs. It sounds very simple, but it is quite difficult,” he admitted.
The 36-year-old also underlined his belief in enjoying the game above all else. “We play the sport for enjoyment more than anything else,” he added. With this century, Rohit not only helped India secure a commanding win but also sent a strong message to his critics, proving that class is permanent.
