Former Samajwadi Party leader Ramgopal Yadav has sparked a fierce political debate after his controversial comments about Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Army Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. Ramgopal Yadav accused a BJP minister of targeting Colonel Qureshi because she is Muslim, while Wing Commander Singh was spared due to assumptions about her caste. His remarks, which questioned the BJP’s nationwide Tiranga Yatra and highlighted alleged caste-based biases within the armed forces, drew sharp criticism from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and other political figures, underscoring the sensitive intersection of caste, religion, and patriotism in India.
Controversy Over Caste and Religion in Armed Forces
At a public event in Moradabad, Ramgopal Yadav expressed his disapproval of the BJP’s Tiranga Yatra, describing it as an election-driven initiative lacking genuine national consensus. He referenced the recent controversy involving Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah’s derogatory remarks against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, noting that the high court had ordered legal action against Shah. Ramgopal Yadav claimed that while Colonel Qureshi was targeted due to her Muslim identity, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh escaped criticism because she was mistakenly perceived as a Rajput. Ramgopal Yadav further revealed that Vyomika Singh is actually a Jatav from Haryana, and Air Marshal AK Bharti, the director general of air operations, belongs to the Ramgopal Ramgopal Yadav community from Purnia.
Ramgopal Yadav’s comments questioned whether the soldiers fighting in Operation Sindoor were representatives of any political party, asserting that caste and religion should not be a lens through which the armed forces are viewed. He suggested that the BJP leaders’ ignorance of the real caste identities of Singh and Bharti highlighted a broader problem of prejudice and misinformation.
Political Leaders Respond Strongly
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath condemned Ramgopal Yadav’s remarks, emphasizing that the Indian armed forces represent national duty beyond any caste or religious identity. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Adityanath criticized Ramgopal Yadav’s caste-based narrative as narrow-minded and disrespectful to the valor of the armed forces. He stressed that the uniform of the Indian Army transcends caste and religion, and any attempt to divide patriotism on these grounds is harmful to national unity.
Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya also condemned the caste-centric view, calling it “low mentality” and praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on women empowerment within the military. Meanwhile, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati condemned both the BJP minister’s and Ramgopal Yadav’s remarks, calling them “shameful” and urging unity in celebrating the military’s achievements during Operation Sindoor.
This debate unfolds against the backdrop of three major airports—Indira Gandhi International Airport, Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport, and Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport—being hubs for troop movements and logistics during the operation, highlighting the critical role of India’s infrastructure in national defense.
