Punjabi-origin social media influencer and YouTuber Nancy Grewal, 45, was fatally stabbed in Canada’s Windsor region after unknown attackers broke into a residence on Tuesday night. The shocking incident has triggered widespread reactions among the Punjabi diaspora, especially after her mother alleged that individuals linked to Khalistani groups were responsible for the killing. Police in Canada have launched a detailed investigation and are examining CCTV footage while collecting evidence from the crime scene and surrounding areas.

The attack reportedly occurred around 9:30 pm local time on March 3. According to Canadian police officials, emergency responders rushed to the location soon after receiving a distress call about a violent assault. Grewal was found critically injured with multiple stab wounds. Paramedics transported her to a nearby hospital, but doctors later confirmed that she died from severe injuries sustained in the attack.

However, conflicting claims have emerged regarding the exact location of the murder. While police initially stated that the incident occurred at a residence in the Windsor area, Grewal’s sister claimed that the attack happened outside a patient’s house nearly 45 minutes away from her own home. The discrepancy has added further mystery to the case as investigators attempt to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the fatal assault.

Born in Sirsa in Haryana, Nancy Grewal later moved with her family to Ludhiana in Punjab before eventually settling in Canada. Her mother currently resides in Jalandhar. Grewal had become well known on social media platforms for her outspoken commentary on political and religious issues, particularly regarding Khalistani activism, Sikh institutions, and influential religious figures. Her controversial views had frequently sparked heated debates online.

Police officials in Windsor have cordoned off the suspected crime scene and nearby areas as part of their ongoing investigation. Officers sealed sections of Todd Lane between Canada Street and Bishop Street, collecting forensic evidence from the staircase and pathway leading to the entrance of one of the houses. Authorities also placed yellow police tape around a wooded area roughly one kilometre away from the suspected murder site near pedestrian paths connected to Herb Gray Parkway.

According to police officer Pierce, investigators received the emergency report late Tuesday evening and immediately dispatched both police units and paramedics to the scene. Members of the Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Services also joined the response team. Despite the rapid medical intervention, Grewal succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

The police have appealed to the public for assistance, asking residents to share any information or security camera footage that may help identify the suspects. Detective Sergeant Jamie Nester has been assigned to lead the investigation, and officials have expressed confidence that the perpetrators will be apprehended.

Family alleges previous threats and attacks

Nancy Grewal’s mother, Chinderpal Kaur, has made serious allegations regarding the motive behind her daughter’s killing. Speaking emotionally about the incident, she claimed that her daughter had previously received several threats and had even survived an earlier attack in Canada.

According to Kaur, Nancy moved to Canada in 2018 to pursue a nursing course. After completing her studies, she began working for two healthcare companies, holding a daytime position at Paramid Company and an evening shift at Care Part Ware Company. Despite her demanding schedule, she maintained regular contact with her family in India.

Kaur said the last conversation with her daughter took place on March 2, just a day before the murder. She explained that Nancy was often extremely busy because of her work commitments, so it was usually Nancy who called the family whenever she found time.

The grieving mother also revealed that Nancy had previously been targeted in an arson attack. In that earlier incident, the house where Nancy lived was allegedly set on fire. She survived the attack, but according to her mother, no justice had been delivered in that case.

Kaur further claimed that her daughter had repeatedly reported threatening phone calls to Canadian authorities. She alleged that individuals had been monitoring Nancy and conducting reconnaissance around her residence before the fatal incident.

According to the mother, a man with his face covered had once approached the house to survey the premises. When he noticed CCTV cameras installed outside the residence, he allegedly panicked and fled the area. Kaur believes that the same group later carried out the murder.

She alleged that three to four individuals were involved in the killing and claimed to know their identities. Appealing directly to Canadian authorities, she demanded strict action against those responsible and urged police to ensure justice for her daughter.

While speaking about Nancy’s work and personality, Kaur described her as someone deeply committed to helping others. She said Nancy often supported people in need and tried to raise awareness about social issues. Overcome with emotion during interviews, Kaur repeatedly insisted that her daughter had been brutally murdered despite previously warning authorities about threats to her life.

Controversial videos and outspoken criticism

Nancy Grewal had gained considerable attention on social media through her YouTube channel and Instagram posts, where she frequently commented on political, religious, and social developments within the Punjabi community. Her outspoken nature often drew strong reactions from both supporters and critics.

One of her final posts on Instagram reportedly contained a controversial remark directed at the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib. In that video, she appeared to support comments made by a person named Satnam Singh and warned that if the Sikh community united, certain religious leaders would face consequences. She also made remarks about the attire of the Akal Takht Jathedar, which many viewers considered controversial.

The video was posted just days before her murder, intensifying speculation about possible motives behind the attack.

Grewal had also earlier posted videos criticising Baba Gurinder Singh Dhillon, the spiritual head of the Radha Soami Dera in Beas. In one of her videos, she questioned claims that the Dera helped people overcome drug addiction.

She asked whether any formal de-addiction centres had actually been established by the organisation and demanded evidence of how many individuals had been successfully rehabilitated. Grewal argued that instead of blindly following religious leaders, individuals should rely on their own hard work to improve their lives.

Apart from religious commentary, Grewal also spoke openly about political figures in Punjab. In one of her videos, she criticised Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal, referencing singer KS Makhan’s association with the party and allegations of drug-related cases against him.

She also made remarks about Bikram Singh Majithia and Punjab Congress leader Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. At one point, she jokingly suggested that comedian Kapil Sharma should invite Raja Warring to his television show, saying his statements would make the program highly entertaining.

Grewal’s commentary frequently extended to the sensitive issue of Khalistan, a proposed separate Sikh homeland. She often criticised certain Khalistani activists and their methods, particularly the burning of the Indian national flag during protests abroad.

In one of her videos, she stated that burning flags would not lead to the creation of a separate country and argued that such acts only spread hatred. However, she also clarified that she was not opposed to the idea of Khalistan itself if it were pursued through peaceful means.

In a video posted on February 21, Grewal addressed rumours circulating on social media claiming that she was anti-Khalistan. She said she had no objection if people wanted to demand Khalistan peacefully but strongly opposed individuals who threatened violence or engaged in criminal activities.

She emphasised that threatening people with death or promoting abductions was unacceptable and said she opposed such behaviour regardless of political ideology. She also criticised those who spread hate online and warned against escalating tensions between communities.

At the same time, Grewal stated that if Indian agencies were involved in targeting individuals in Canada through criminal networks, she would also oppose such actions. She argued that no country had the right to carry out killings on foreign soil and warned that such incidents could increase hostility between nations.

Her criticism extended to Khalistani activist Gurpatwant Singh Pannu, whom she once described as someone who frequently issued threats against India. Grewal said her opposition to him stemmed from his alleged role in encouraging people to damage Indian national symbols.

She accused Pannu of inciting young people with provocative statements and promises of financial rewards for hoisting Khalistan flags at prominent locations such as Delhi’s Red Fort. According to Grewal, such actions only misled youth and created unnecessary tension.

Nancy Grewal had originally built her public presence through stage performances and social service activities. She performed at religious and community events across Punjab, particularly in the Doaba region including Jalandhar, Kapurthala, and Hoshiarpur. Her performances continued until around 2015.

Afterwards, she became associated with the Aam Aadmi Party for a brief period before moving to Canada. In addition to her political commentary and activism, Grewal also posted entertainment content online, including reels where she lip-synced to popular Hindi film songs.

Her Facebook profile listed Ludhiana as her hometown. She studied at Satluj Public School in Haryana and later attended Government College in Sirsa. According to information on her social media accounts, she pursued nursing education at the University of Toronto after moving to Canada.

The circumstances surrounding Nancy Grewal’s death remain under active investigation as Canadian authorities continue to examine evidence, review surveillance footage, and gather witness statements to identify those responsible for the fatal attack.
