An Indian-origin woman from Punjab was tragically killed, and her cousin critically injured in a shooting incident in Middlesex County, New Jersey, USA. The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Gaurav Gill, also of Indian origin, has been apprehended by law enforcement authorities.
According to reports from the Times of India, the incident occurred when police responded to gunfire and discovered two women suffering from severe gunshot wounds on Wednesday (June 14). Both victims were immediately airlifted to a hospital in critical condition. Sadly, 29-year-old Jasvir Kaur succumbed to her injuries, while her 20-year-old cousin, Gagandeep Kaur, remains in critical condition.
Gaurav Gill was arrested later the same day after a pursuit by law enforcement officers. He was apprehended in a backyard approximately half a mile from the scene of the shooting. Gill, who resides in Kent, now faces serious charges including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and various weapon-related offenses.
The residence where the tragic incident took place is owned by Gurmukh Singh, who described Jasvir Kaur as a hardworking and compassionate individual. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and authorities have not disclosed whether Gill had any prior connection to the victims.
The Indian consulate in New York expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and assuring coordination with RWJ Barnabas Health and Carteret Police Department for further updates on the case.
