Indian News Agency Press Trust of India (PTI) has entered into a partnership with Meta’s Third Party Fact-Checking Programme (3PFC) to detect, review, and rate misinformation across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp platforms.
The collaboration between Meta and India’s premier news agency comes at a crucial juncture, with Lok Sabha election campaigning gaining momentum. Through this initiative, PTI aims to bolster efforts in curbing misinformation prevalent in India’s digital landscape and empower users with accurate information.
Vijay Joshi, CEO & Editor-in-Chief of PTI, highlighted the significance of this collaboration, stating, “By joining Meta’s 3PFC programme, PTI Fact Check’s reach and impact will be significantly amplified. This collaboration will strengthen the fight against misinformation in India’s digital landscape and empower users to navigate the online world with greater confidence.”
Established in 1947, PTI is renowned as one of Asia’s oldest and largest news agencies, boasting an extensive network of correspondents worldwide. The agency provides comprehensive news coverage across various formats, including text, video, photographs, and infographics.
Meta’s Third Party Fact-Checking Programme partners with independent fact-checkers certified through the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) to identify, review, and rate viral misinformation on its platforms. With nearly 100 partners globally, Meta has built the largest independent fact-checking network in multiple languages.
PTI’s credibility and commitment to journalistic ethics make it a valuable addition to Meta’s fact-checking endeavours. The news agency launched its fact-checking arm, PTI Fact Check, in 2022, comprising a dedicated team of experienced journalists tasked with verifying the accuracy of online claims.
Utilizing a rigorous methodology, PTI Fact Check cross-references information with credible sources, consults experts, and analyses data to validate claims. Fact-checks are subsequently published on PTI’s website and social media platforms.
Meta’s 3PFC programme flags false or misleading content identified by fact-checkers, providing users with links to factual information. This proactive approach disrupts the dissemination of misinformation and empowers users to make informed decisions.
Meta’s partnership with PTI adds to its roster of fact-checking partners in India, reinforcing the country’s position with the most third-party fact-checking collaborators globally across Meta platforms. The 3PFC programme extends coverage in 16 Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, Punjabi, Assamese, Manipuri/Meitei, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Kashmiri, Bhojpuri, Oriya, and Nepali, alongside English.
