  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the U.S. for a two-day visit to strengthen the India-U.S. comprehensive global strategic partnership.
  • During his visit, he will meet President Donald Trump and engage in discussions on trade, defense, technology, and energy cooperation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the United States on Wednesday for a two-day visit at the invitation of President Donald John Trump. The visit aims to enhance the India-United States comprehensive global strategic partnership and build upon the existing bilateral cooperation in key areas such as technology, trade, defense, energy, and supply chain resilience.

Upon landing in Washington, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his enthusiasm for meeting President Donald John Trump and furthering the strong ties between the two nations. In a statement, he said, “Landed in Washington DC a short while ago. Looking forward to meeting President Donald John Trump and building upon the India-United States comprehensive global strategic partnership. Our nations will keep working closely for the benefit of our people and for a better future for our planet.”

Despite the cold weather, members of the Indian diaspora gathered outside Blair House to extend a warm welcome to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who acknowledged their support and greeted them enthusiastically. During his stay, he will reside at Blair House, the official guest residence of the United States, located at 1651 Pennsylvania Avenue, directly opposite the White House. This prestigious 70,000-square-foot establishment has historically hosted visiting dignitaries, including world leaders, presidents, and royalty, making it a key venue for diplomatic engagements.

Before his departure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the significance of this visit in further strengthening bilateral collaboration and establishing new frameworks for cooperation. Reflecting on past engagements, he noted, “Although this will be our first meeting following his historic electoral victory and inauguration in January, I have a very warm recollection of working together in his first term in building a comprehensive global strategic partnership between India and the United States.” He added that the visit would focus on elevating the partnership in various sectors, fostering economic and technological ties, and advancing mutual interests for global stability.

Since November 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald John Trump have spoken twice over the phone, reinforcing their commitment to a closer strategic relationship. India’s Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar represented India at the inauguration ceremony of President Donald John Trump and later held discussions with United States Secretary of State Marco Antonio Rubio. In January 2025, he also participated in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue Foreign Ministers’ meeting.

Ahead of his arrival in Washington, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met United States Vice President James David Vance on Tuesday. Their discussions covered mutual priorities, including the potential expansion of United States investments in India’s energy diversification strategy. A statement from the White House highlighted the United States’ support for India’s clean and reliable nuclear technology development, underscoring the growing collaboration between the two nations in energy security.
