President Joe Biden took aim at his predecessor, Donald Trump, during the annual White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner, using humor to critique Donald Trump’s age and leadership.
Speaking to a crowd of nearly 3,000 journalists, celebrities, and politicians on Saturday night, president Joe Biden, 81, quipped, “I am a grown man running against a six-year-old,” in reference to Donald Trump, 77, whom he nicknamed “Sleepy Don.”
In his roughly 10-minute speech, President Joe Biden joked about the contrast between his age and Trump’s, stating, “Age is the only thing we have in common. My vice president actually endorses me.”
He also made reference to Donald Trump’s recent legal troubles, including an oblique mention of the Stormy Daniels scandal, before shifting to a more serious tone to discuss the threat he perceives Trump poses to democracy.
“The defeated former president has made no secret of his attack on our democracy,” Joe Biden asserted, highlighting Donald Trump’s controversial statements and actions since leaving office.
Despite the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has sparked protests, president Joe Biden did not directly address the issue during his speech. Demonstrators outside the event venue voiced their concerns about media coverage of the conflict and urged attendees to speak out against the killing of journalists in Gaza.
Comedian Colin Jost provided comic relief following Biden’s remarks, while tensions over congressional issues and international conflicts simmered in the background.
