In a swift turn of events, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has nominated veteran prosecutor and longtime ally Pam Bondi as his choice for attorney general, just hours after Representative Matt Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration. Bondi, a former Florida attorney general with nearly two decades of prosecutorial experience, is known for her tough stance on violent crime and her staunch support of Donald Trump throughout his political career.
Bondi’s deep ties with Donald Trump began during his 2016 presidential campaign and solidified during his first Senate impeachment trial, where she was a prominent figure in his legal defense team. More recently, she made headlines for appearing in court during Donald Trump’s hush money trial in New York and for her leadership role in the America First Policy Institute, a conservative think tank founded by former Donald Trump officials.
Donald Trump announced the nomination via social media, describing Bondi as “a prosecutor for nearly 20 years” who “made the streets safe for Florida Families.” He expressed confidence in her ability to lead the Department of Justice (DOJ) and align its focus with his administration’s priorities, including dismantling criminal organizations, protecting U.S. borders, and restoring public confidence in the department.
If confirmed by the Senate, Bondi will oversee the DOJ’s $45 billion budget and its workforce of over 115,000 employees. She is also expected to play a central role in advancing Donald Trump’s controversial plans to target political adversaries and end what he calls “weaponized government.” Bondi has been an outspoken critic of the criminal cases brought against Donald Trump and special counsel Jack Smith, who charged the former president in two federal cases.
Her nomination comes after Matt Gaetz, facing sexual misconduct allegations and controversy over a congressional report, withdrew from consideration. Gaetz, a staunch Donald Trump supporter, stated that the allegations were “unfairly becoming a distraction” to the incoming administration. Hours after withdrawing, Gaetz congratulated Bondi, calling her “a stellar selection” and “a champion for all Americans.”
Bondi’s appointment is expected to proceed more smoothly than Gaetz’s tumultuous nomination process. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham hailed her as “a grand slam” and predicted her quick confirmation. With Bondi’s nomination, Donald Trump continues to fill high-ranking positions with trusted allies, cementing the influence of loyalists in his administration as he prepares to take office.
