Prayagraj witnessed a significant moment in the ongoing Maha Kumbh as President Droupadi Murmu took a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam on her visit to the sacred city. Accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the President arrived in Prayagraj earlier in the day and made her way to the revered confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. Visuals from the site showed her being escorted by security personnel on a floating jetty before she climbed down a ramp to immerse herself in the holy waters.
Her visit comes just over a week after a tragic stampede during the auspicious occasion of Mouni Amavasya, which claimed the lives of about 30 devotees. The unfortunate incident occurred when an overwhelming number of pilgrims thronged the Sangam in the early hours to take a sacred dip. Despite the tragedy, the religious fervor remains undeterred, with at least 44 crore devotees having already participated in the Maha Kumbh since it began last month.
Apart from performing rituals at the Sangam, President Murmu is set to visit the Bade Hanuman Temple and the Akshayavat tree, a site deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and considered a symbol of immortality. The President will also explore the Digital Maha Kumbh Experience Centre, a cutting-edge initiative that provides devotees with a virtual tour of the grand religious gathering using advanced technology.
The Maha Kumbh, which occurs once every twelve years, is regarded as one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, drawing millions of pilgrims, sadhus, and spiritual seekers. The significance of the event has also attracted top leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, both of whom have already taken a dip at the Sangam.
To ensure the President’s security during her visit, heavy security arrangements have been put in place across Prayagraj. However, the influx of pilgrims has led to severe traffic congestion, with massive jams reported on key routes leading to the city from neighboring states. Authorities in Madhya Pradesh, which shares a border with Uttar Pradesh, have implemented strict vehicle movement restrictions at various checkpoints. Within Prayagraj, the city’s traffic police have enforced diversions, while railway authorities have temporarily closed Prayagraj Sangam railway station and imposed a single-direction traffic system at Prayagraj Junction to manage the unprecedented rush.
