In a solemn ceremony held on Saturday, President Droupadi Murmu awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, to four distinguished personalities, including two former Prime Ministers, an agronomist, and a former Chief Minister of Bihar, recognizing their monumental contributions to the nation.
The awardees included former Prime Ministers Chaudhary Charan Singh and PV Narasimha Rao, agronomist MS Swaminathan, and former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur, all conferred posthumously. The Bharat Ratna was received on their behalf by family members, marking a historic moment of national acknowledgment and remembrance.
Chaudhary Charan Singh, India’s fifth Prime Minister and a significant figure in Indian politics known for his dedication to the agrarian community, was represented by his grandson Jayant Singh. PV Narasimha Rao, remembered for initiating economic reforms that transformed the Indian economy, was honored through his son PV Prabhakar Rao.
The award for MS Swaminathan, hailed as the ‘Father of the Green Revolution’ for his groundbreaking work in agriculture, and Karpoori Thakur, known for his advocacy for social justice and the upliftment of the underprivileged, was received by their descendants, commemorating their lasting legacies.
Additionally, the government announced that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalwart and former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani would be awarded the Bharat Ratna in a separate ceremony at his residence on March 31, in light of his ailing health. This special arrangement underscores the government’s respect and recognition of Advani’s pivotal role in Indian politics.
This year’s selection of Bharat Ratna recipients reflects India’s diverse and rich heritage of leadership and innovation across various fields, from political stewardship and economic reforms to agricultural advancement and social empowerment, cementing their enduring contributions to the nation’s progress and identity.
