To boost the food processing sector and promote self-reliance, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) launched the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro food processing Enterprises (PMFMPE) Scheme under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. The scheme, with an outlay of Rs. 10,000 Crore, aims to provide financial, technical, and business support for setting up and upgrading micro food processing enterprises in the country.
Supporting Micro Enterprises
The PMFMPE Scheme is designed to support 2 lakh micro food processing enterprises over a five-year period from 2020-21 to 2024-25. It primarily follows the One District One Product (ODOP) approach, which focuses on promoting local products in the food processing sector. This approach helps in procuring inputs, availing common services, and marketing products on a larger scale, thereby benefiting both producers and consumers.
Financial Assistance and Subsidies
Under the scheme, micro enterprises receive credit-linked subsidies, with 62,282 loans sanctioned so far. These loans benefit individual beneficiaries, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), Self Help Groups (SHGs), and Producer Co-operative Societies. Additionally, the scheme provides financial support for working capital and purchase of small tools for each member of SHGs engaged in food processing activities.
Empowering Through Marketing and Branding
To enhance marketing and branding efforts, the PMFMPE Scheme supports FPOs, SHGs, and Cooperatives of ODOP-based micro food processing enterprises. It includes assistance for market study, product standardization, packaging material, quality control, warehousing, storage rentals, and marketing promotion. This support aims to improve the visibility and competitiveness of local food products in domestic and international markets.
Success and Expansion
In its two years of implementation, the PMFMPE Scheme has made significant strides, supporting over 43,000 micro food processing enterprises across 35 States and Union Territories. The scheme’s impact has been felt in states like Maharashtra and Rajasthan, with 22,234 and 7,331 units allocated respectively. Additionally, collaborations with various ministries, institutions, and banks have facilitated smooth implementation and resolution of challenges faced by micro enterprises.
Future Outlook
As the PMFMPE Scheme continues to empower micro food processing enterprises, it is expected to drive economic growth, create employment opportunities, and improve the livelihoods of millions engaged in the sector. With its focus on local products and sustainable practices, the scheme aligns with the broader vision of promoting self-reliance and inclusive growth in the food processing industry.
The PMFMPE Scheme stands as a ray of hope for micro food processing enterprises, providing them with the necessary support to thrive and contribute to India’s economic growth.
