Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 11 (ANI): Following the rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee (PGT) female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal on Sunday said that as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court, the post-mortem report has been handed over to the family, adding that Assistant Commissioner of Police (Chandan Guha) posted on duty on the night of the incident has been removed from the post.

The post-graduate trainee doctor was found raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

“Joint CP Crime has met the family of the deceased today also. The post-mortem report has been handed over to the family as per the Supreme Court guidelines. The questions of the students have been heard and answers have also been given to them. Students can contact us at any time with any problems. Students of any college can meet us for any problem. The appeal to the students is that if you have any input, then share it with us. Their (students) demand was that the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Chandan Guha) posted on duty on the night of the incident should be removed from the post, so we have removed him. When they (the students) will end their protest, it is up to them but the police-administration has full support. They can contact us with any problem without hesitation,” Goyal said.

The students and doctors of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital met the Commissioner of Police of Kolkata.

Dr Shreya Shaw said that the Commissioner of Police of Kolkata has given some assurance that a few of the demands that the students placed before the authorities, administration.

“We had a meeting with the Commissioner of Police of Kolkata. He has given us some assurance that a few of the demands that we placed before the authorities, administration, and the investigation team that the postmortem report and CCTV footage be shown to us. At least some of us should be able to see the evidence so that we know there is no tampering of evidence and an honest investigation is being carried out… They have agreed to our demands. For now, we have some assurance but we are not fully satisfied because this protest is still going on and not all our demands are met. Emergency and non-emergency are not going on at RG Kar till all our demands are met,” Shaw said.

The Residents Doctors Association in AIIMS, Delhi, held protests over the alleged rape and murder of a medical student. The protesters held a candle march and demanded justice for the victim.

Meanwhile, JMM MP Mahua Maji said that the incident is highly condemnable.

“Wherever such incidents are happening, it is highly condemnable and the government of any state will have to take this seriously and whoever is guilty will have to be found immediately and given the harshest punishment…This matter should not be politicised,” Maji said.

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar demanded a CBI inquiry into the rape and murder of a woman doctor at a medical college in Kolkata, as the police had initially labelled the case as a suicide before changing it to a murder case.

“It is a very shameful incident. The inquiry should be conducted properly. We demand a CBI inquiry because the police first said that it was a case of suicide and then said that it was a murder case. The accused they have arrested is also a part of the police administration,” he said.

The tragic incident has led to widespread outrage and protests. The Federation of Resident Doctors Associations (FORDA) has called for a nationwide halt of elective services, including OPD, wards, and elective OT’s, in hospitals on August 12 to support the residents of RG Kar Medical College. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, and Maulana Azad Medical College will suspend elective services in solidarity.

The tragic incident has ignited a political storm in West Bengal. On August 10, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee proposed introducing an ordinance or bill for expedited rape trials, criticizing the politicization of the issue.

On Saturday, August 10, a group of doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal, in Madhya Pradesh, held a candlelight march on Saturday evening to protest the death of a female post-graduate trainee (PGT) at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal’s Kolkata.

Similarly, doctors at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi also protested, demanding a CBI inquiry into the incident. Protesters carried posters and chanted slogans such as, “We want a CBI inquiry.” (ANI)
