A police officer has been suspended after a viral video showed him allegedly mixing ash into the food prepared for a Bhandara (community feast) at the Maha Kumbh Mela. The incident has sparked outrage, prompting swift action from authorities.
The officer in question, identified as Station House Officer of Soraon, Brijesh Kumar Tiwari, was suspended on Thursday following the circulation of the video on social media. The action was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganga Nagar, Kuldeep Singh Gunawat. The footage allegedly shows the officer adding ash to food being cooked over a stove at one of the many Bhandaras set up to serve pilgrims attending the religious gathering in Prayagraj.
The video, which spread widely on social media platform X, led to demands for strict action against the officer. A user tagged the official account of Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganga Nagar, calling the act “shameful” and urging authorities to take immediate action. In response, the department confirmed that Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganga Nagar had taken cognizance of the matter and suspended the officer based on a report from Assistant Commissioner of Police Soraon. The department has also initiated disciplinary proceedings against the officer.
Samajwadi Party president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav also shared the video, criticizing the incident and drawing public attention to it. He condemned the act and suggested that such actions undermine the efforts of those providing food and assistance to devotees at the Maha Kumbh. “It is unfortunate that the good efforts of those who are making arrangements to provide food and water to those stranded at the Maha Kumbh are being scuttled due to political animosity. The public should take notice!” he stated in his post.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, a major religious event, has drawn millions of pilgrims to Prayagraj. Many individuals, religious groups, and organizations have set up community kitchens to provide free or affordable meals to visiting devotees. The incident has raised concerns over food safety at these kitchens, with authorities assuring that strict vigilance will be maintained to prevent any further disruptions.
As investigations continue, the police department has reiterated its commitment to upholding law and order at the Maha Kumbh and ensuring that the sanctity of religious and humanitarian efforts remains protected. The suspension of the officer marks a strong response from authorities, emphasizing zero tolerance for misconduct that could harm public faith in the arrangements made for pilgrims.
