In a notable diplomatic outreach, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially conveyed his congratulations to Shehbaz Sharif, the recently elected Prime Minister of Pakistan. This diplomatic gesture signifies the first formal response from the Indian government following the conclusion of the recent electoral process in the neighboring nation.
Shehbaz Sharif, sibling to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, assumed the office of Prime Minister of Pakistan on Monday amidst a backdrop characterized by controversy and allegations of electoral irregularities. His inauguration ceremony, presided over by President Arif Alvi in Islamabad, occurred subsequent to his parliamentary endorsement, albeit amid protests from legislators aligned with the incarcerated former Prime Minister, Imran Khan.
Prime Minister Modi, through the medium of social media platform X, expressed his felicitations, stating, “Congratulations to @CMShehbaz on being sworn in as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.” Sharif’s reacquisition of the premiership marks his second term in office, following his earlier incumbency from April 2022 to August 2023, which concluded with the dissolution of Pakistan’s parliament ahead of the recent electoral process.
Congratulations to @CMShehbaz on being sworn in as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Election 2024
Earlier this month, amidst a contentious electoral landscape, the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and the Pakistan Peoples Party forged a coalition government. This coalition emerged even as candidates supported by incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan clinched the majority of seats in the National Assembly, with Khan alleging that Sharif’s ascendancy constituted a violation of the people’s mandate.
It is pertinent to note that, the latter (PTI) secured the highest number of seats (93) in the National Assembly, as against the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) with 75 seats and Pakistan Peoples Party’s 54 seats.
India-Pakistan Ties
Moreover, the congratulatory gesture from Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s newly-elected Prime Minister, comes at a critical juncture in the tumultuous relationship between India and Pakistan. Despite historical animosities and recurring disputes, both nations have periodically sought to engage in diplomatic dialogues and regional cooperation efforts. However, the persistent challenges and deep-rooted mistrust continue to hinder the prospects of sustainable peace and stability in the region. As India cautiously observes the unfolding political dynamics in Pakistan, the trajectory of Indo-Pakistani ties remains uncertain, with the potential for both cooperation and conflict looming on the horizon.
