Piece By Piece, the new biopic on Pharrell Williams, stands out for its unique approach—it’s entirely animated with Lego. Directed by Morgan Neville, this unconventional documentary has captivated critics with its joyous, playful style. Yet, it notably sidesteps one of Pharrell’s most debated career moments: the plagiarism controversy surrounding “Blurred Lines,” which Williams co-wrote with Robin Thicke. Despite the song’s presence on the soundtrack, the film excludes any mention of the infamous trial, which saw Williams and Thicke ordered to pay $5 million to Marvin Gaye’s estate after a jury ruled that “Blurred Lines” had copied the “feel” of Gaye’s Got To Give It Up.
Morgan Neville, the Oscar-winning director known for 20 Feet From Stardom, acknowledged the deliberate omission, explaining that while he initially explored including the controversy, it disrupted the film’s narrative. “Every time I looked at trying to work it in, a scene about copyright law felt like it belonged in a different movie,” Morgan Neville told the BBC. Despite the trial’s impact on the music industry, Morgan Neville believes Pharrell’s creativity wasn’t diminished by the decision. “It’s not like Pharrell learned a big lesson from the case,” he said, emphasizing his goal to portray Pharrell’s creative journey rather than a legal battle. Morgan Neville himself expressed disdain for the verdict, which he considers a misstep in understanding creative influence, as it blurred the line between inspiration and theft.
The idea for Piece By Piece began when Pharrell pitched Morgan Neville an unusual request: a Lego-animated documentary. Morgan Neville admits he was intrigued, envisioning the potential of animation to break documentary conventions, allowing scenes to transcend reality, traveling through Pharrell’s creative imagination. With Lego as a partner, the film illustrates Pharrell’s beats as unique Lego sculptures, each capturing the artist’s synesthetic perceptions of color and shape in music, crafted with Pharrell’s guidance. Interviews with icons like Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, and Snoop Dogg were filmed years ago under wraps; only recently did Morgan Neville reveal 3D Lego renderings of their characters.
Morgan Neville emphasizes that Piece By Piece focuses on Pharrell rediscovering his creative muse. Raised in Virginia, Pharrell was a “black nerd” whose unconventional beats with The Neptunes initially faced rejection before finding mainstream success. Now, Morgan Neville says, Pharrell must grapple with staying true to his art as his once-unorthodox sound dominates the industry.
With Piece By Piece hitting cinemas, Morgan Neville’s experiment challenges biopic formulas, offering a fresh, playful take on the music documentary genre and capturing Pharrell’s journey of self-discovery, unburdened by past controversies.
