The Paris Olympics, scheduled to unfold from July 26 to August 11, will witness Indian athletes striving for excellence and victory on the global stage. In a significant decision, it has been finalized that the traditional saree will make a comeback as the official ceremonial uniform for female athletes, while male athletes will attire in kurta-pyjamas during the opening ceremony.
Embracing heritage and national pride, the saree will serve as the official ceremonial attire for India’s female athletes, marking its return after its last appearance at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Unlike previous iterations, the female athletes will now wear standalone pre-pleated ikat printed sarees, representing a blend of tradition and contemporary elegance.
According to reports from the Times of India, the sarees will be accompanied by matching blouses featuring the Indian Olympics Association’s (IOA) insignia. The saffron-colored blouses symbolize the strength and resilience of the nation, complementing the intricate ikat prints, which are achieved through a tie-dyeing method on woven fabric.
Meanwhile, male athletes will don kurta-pyjamas paired with matching bandi jackets adorned with the IOA insignia, as approved by the IOA on Tuesday. This attire choice aligns with the government’s push for traditional Indian attire at the Games, reflecting a commitment to showcasing the country’s cultural heritage on the international stage.
The ceremonial uniforms for both men and women will prominently feature impressions of the Indian flag. Female athletes will sport saffron blouses complemented by green and orange hues on their ikat printed sarees, while male athletes will have the tricolor printed on the tape and lower panels of their bandi jackets.
This decision underscores a deliberate celebration of India’s rich cultural heritage and serves as a poignant representation of the nation’s identity at the prestigious Paris Olympics 2024. As India’s athletes prepare to compete with determination and valor, the revival of traditional Indian attire adds a touch of elegance and national pride to the grandeur of the opening ceremony.
