22-year-old Sift Kaur Samra, an exceptional Indian shooter, is set to make her debut at the Paris Olympics 2024. Sift Kaur Samra’s journey in shooting began at the tender age of nine, thanks to her cousin, a shotgun shooter, who introduced her to the sport at a shooting range in Punjab. Hailing from an agricultural family involved in the rice-selling business, Sift Kaur Samra has shown remarkable dedication and talent in both academics and sports. She cleared the NEET exam and was pursuing an MBBS degree in Faridkot before deciding to focus solely on shooting.
The spotlight turned towards Sift Kaur Samra when she shattered the world record in the Asian Games, previously held by Britain’s Seonaid McIntosh. Her extraordinary performance saw her finish with a total score of 469.6, surpassing McIntosh’s record by 2.6 points. Sift Kaur Samra secured her spot in the Indian shooting team for the Paris Olympics by earning an Olympic quota in August 2023 during the ISSF World Championships in Baku, where she finished fifth in the women’s 50-metre rifle three-positions event. She further solidified her place by excelling in the Olympic Selection Trials held in Bhopal in May 2024.
Her recent performances have been impressive, showcasing her readiness for the Olympics. In June 2024, Sift Kaur Samra participated in the ISSF World Cup in Munich, winning a bronze medal with a score of 452.9. Earlier, in January 2024, she secured a silver medal at the Asian Championship in Jakarta with a final score of 460.6.
Sift Kaur Samra is scheduled to compete in the women’s 50-metre rifle three-positions event at the Paris Olympics alongside fellow Indian shooter Anjum Moudgil. The pre-event training for this discipline will take place on July 31, with the qualification round on August 1 and the final on August 2.
