Recognizing the pivotal role of adequate rest in athletes’ performance, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has appointed sleep expert Dr. Monika Sharma to ensure optimal sleep conditions for the nation’s athletes.
Dr. Sharma, known for her work at Sleep Moksha in Panchkula, Haryana, has been collaborating with the IOA since December to implement a tailored sleep optimization program. Her expertise aims to mitigate the challenges athletes face in maintaining healthy sleep patterns amidst the pressures of international competition.
“Sleep is crucial for athletes’ recovery and performance, especially in sports where marginal gains matter,” Dr. Sharma emphasized, highlighting the physiological and cognitive benefits of quality sleep. She noted common issues athletes encounter, such as difficulty falling asleep and disruptions due to travel and unfamiliar environments.
To prepare for the time zone differences and conditions in Paris, Indian athletes have undergone specialized sleep training under Dr. Sharma’s guidance. Some have already acclimatized by traveling to Europe, aligning their internal clocks with those expected during the Games.
The IOA has invested in sleep aids for athletes, including travel kits equipped with essentials like eye masks, earplugs, and neck pillows. Additionally, sleep pods will be available at the Games Village, providing a sanctuary for athletes experiencing sleep disturbances.
Dr. Sharma cautioned against the misuse of sleep medications, emphasizing the importance of addressing underlying sleep issues through non-pharmacological methods. “Medication may offer temporary relief but can lead to dependency and artificial sleep,” she cautioned, advocating for holistic approaches to sleep management.
Following India’s record haul of seven medals at the Tokyo Olympics, expectations are high for an even stronger performance in Paris. The proactive measures taken by the IOA to prioritize athletes’ sleep underscore their commitment to optimizing performance and ensuring peak physical and mental readiness.
