In a recent parliamentary session, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, faced significant embarrassment after citing a fabricated news article to praise the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). The article, purportedly from the UK-based newspaper The Daily Telegraph, lauded the PAF as the “undisputed king of the skies.” However, it was later revealed that the image was AI-generated and entirely fictitious. This incident has sparked widespread criticism and highlighted the dangers of disseminating unverified information at official levels.
AI-Generated Image Misleads Parliament
During his address to the Senate on May 15, 2025, Ishaq Dar referenced an image circulating on social media, which appeared to be the front page of The Daily Telegraph dated May 10, 2025. The headline read: “Pakistan Air Force: The undisputed king of the skies.” Dar’s citation aimed to bolster national pride and assert the PAF’s superiority. However, the image was quickly scrutinized and debunked by multiple fact-checking agencies.
The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check unit in India confirmed that the image was AI-generated and not published by The Daily Telegraph. They stated, “The Daily Telegraph has NEVER carried any such article.” The PIB also shared a video of Dar making the claim in the Senate, emphasizing the spread of digital misinformation.
Domestic Media and Journalists Expose the Fabrication
Adding to the embarrassment, Pakistan’s own media outlets, including The Dawn, conducted independent investigations into the image’s authenticity. Their fact-checking team, iVerify Pakistan, analyzed the content and found multiple discrepancies, such as spelling errors, mistyped sentences, and language inconsistencies. They concluded that the image was fake and had never been published by the UK-based newspaper.
Pakistani journalist Imran Mukhtar also fact-checked the image, stating, “Earlier today, Deputy PM & Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar cited this false news during his speech on the floor of the Senate to support claims of PAF’s dominance over India. No doubt, the PAF did dominate — but the image in question is fake.”
This incident underscores the importance of verifying information before presenting it in official capacities. It also highlights the growing challenge of AI-generated misinformation and its potential to mislead even high-ranking officials. As the digital landscape evolves, the need for rigorous fact-checking and media literacy becomes increasingly critical.
