Pakistan coach Gary Kirsten expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance following their narrow loss to India in the T20 World Cup match held in New York on June 9. Chasing a modest target of 120 runs, Pakistan appeared to be in control at 73 for 2 in 13 overs but ultimately succumbed to pressure, losing the match by 6 runs.
Post-Match Analysis
In the post-match press conference, Gary Kirsten acknowledged that Pakistan put unnecessary pressure on themselves, which contributed to their defeat. He emphasized the importance of experienced players making strategic decisions during crucial moments.
“You are pretty much spot-on. These guys are all international players and they’re aware that when they’re not performing at their best, there’s going to be pressure put on them. That’s understandable, but a lot of these guys have played a lot of T20 cricket around the world over many, many years and it’s really up to them to decide how they’re going to take their games forward,” said Gary Kirsten.
Execution Issues
Gary Kirsten noted that the team followed the game plan effectively for the first 15 overs, maintaining a run-a-ball pace. However, the loss of wickets disrupted their rhythm, leading to a decline in strike rotation and an over-reliance on boundaries.
“The message from all of us was to look for the odd boundary, try and capitalize on the loose balls, and make sure that you can get as many ones as you can through the innings. And I thought we did that brilliantly for 15 overs. We kept it at a run a ball, and then we lost wickets and then we stopped scoring ones and then we were looking for boundaries and once you’ve got to that point it was always going to be hard. So, the message was to do what we executed on for 15 overs,” explained Gary Kirsten.
Upcoming Match
Pakistan’s next match is against Canada on June 11 in New York, with their Super 8s hopes hanging in the balance. The team will need to regroup and address the issues highlighted by Gary Kirsten to keep their tournament aspirations alive.
