A Pakistani man with alleged ties to Iran has been charged in a conspiracy to carry out political assassinations on US soil, targeting high-profile figures including former President Donald Trump. The US Justice Department disclosed the case on Tuesday, describing it as a murder-for-hire scheme. FBI Director Christopher Wray called it a “dangerous murder-for-hire plot… straight out of the Iranian playbook.”
The suspect, 46-year-old Asif Merchant, reportedly arrived in the US from Pakistan after spending time in Iran. According to the indictment, Merchant traveled to New York in June to meet with individuals he believed were hired assassins. He paid a $5,000 advance to two would-be killers, who were actually undercover law enforcement officers, as reported by the Associated Press.
Merchant was arrested last month as he was preparing to leave the US. Before departing, he informed the undercover officers that he would provide further instructions, including the names of the targets, in August and September after his return to Pakistan. While the indictment did not explicitly name former President Donald Trump, sources cited by CBS indicated that the former president was among the intended targets. This revelation led to increased security measures for former President Donald Trump.
“A foreign-directed plot to kill a public official, or any US citizen, is a threat to our national security and will be met with the full might and resources of the FBI,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray, as quoted by the BBC.
The charges against Merchant come in the wake of a separate assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Last month, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump at an election rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. However, the Justice Department’s indictment against Merchant does not link him to the July 13 attempt.
The investigation into Merchant’s activities revealed that he had traveled to the US with the intention of orchestrating political killings. His alleged connections to Iran and the detailed planning of the assassination plot underscore the seriousness of the threat. US authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full extent of the conspiracy and any additional targets or collaborators involved.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by US law enforcement and intelligence agencies in countering foreign-directed threats against public officials and citizens. The swift action by the FBI and other agencies demonstrates their commitment to protecting national security and ensuring the safety of individuals potentially targeted by such plots.
