Chennai Super Kings’ IPL 2025 journey has ended in disappointment, with the team missing out on playoff qualification after a string of underwhelming performances. A mix of rigid strategies, questionable auction choices, unsteady leadership, and a lack of faith in young talent derailed what could have been another title run for the five-time champions.
CSK’s campaign officially crumbled after their four-wicket loss to Punjab Kings on April 30. The defeat marked a low point in a season where they failed to cross 200 batting first even once before that match. In a tournament dominated by fearless batting, CSK stuck to a conservative approach that didn’t match the evolving T20 landscape.
Auction misfires and batting missteps
Entering the mega auction with Rs 55 crore, CSK opted to retain familiar names but failed to bring in explosive talent at the top. Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, and Rahul Tripathi couldn’t provide the aggression needed in powerplays. Their overseas picks, aside from occasional flashes from Noor Ahmed, failed to make a serious impact.
CSK’s bowling, long considered a dependable unit, lacked sharpness. Matheesha Pathirana’s fitness issues and inconsistent support from others made defending totals an uphill task. Despite playing on spin-friendly tracks, even marquee signing Ravichandran Ashwin could not deliver.
Leadership and veteran underperformance
An early injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad disrupted leadership plans and forced MS Dhoni to return as captain. While MS Dhoni remains a tactical genius, this version of CSK needed bold, flexible thinking, not just past laurels. The shift in command mid-season led to confusion in game plans.
Veteran stars also failed to live up to expectations. Ravindra Jadeja struggled with both bat and ball, and Ashwin’s seven-match stint brought just five wickets. Without solid performances from their core, the pressure on inexperienced players grew significantly.
CSK also waited too long to test new blood. Players like Shaikh Rasheed and Ayush Mhatre were only tried later in the season, thrown into tough roles with little preparation. In contrast, other franchises thrived by backing youth from the outset.
In a year that rewarded audacity and adaptation, CSK clung to familiar formulas. That hesitation cost them dearly, leaving a fanbase used to glory with more questions than answers.
