Oman has made a significant diplomatic move by calling for an emergency international conference on Palestine, urging all conflicting parties to come together with the aim of establishing a permanent ceasefire and ending the ongoing conflict to pave the way for regional and international peace.
Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi highlighted that Oman’s initiative mirrors the historic Madrid Peace Conference initiated by former US President George H.W. Bush in 1991. The Madrid Conference facilitated multilateral negotiations aimed at resolving the Arab-Israeli conflict, signaling hope for progress until tragically interrupted.
In an article penned for the global business magazine “The Economist,” Minister Albusaidi underscored the urgency of addressing the deepening crisis in Gaza, emphasizing that Oman, like its neighbors, is gravely affected by the consequences of the conflict. He stressed that the prospect of further escalation poses a threat to the entire region, making a ceasefire not only a humanitarian imperative but also a strategic necessity.
Minister Albusaidi emphasized the critical transition from ceasefire to an emergency conference, asserting that without the establishment of a Palestinian state, the region remains trapped in a relentless cycle of violence. He articulated that movements like Hamas cannot be eradicated entirely, as they are deeply ingrained in their communities. Therefore, engaging in dialogue and listening to all stakeholders, including groups like Hamas, are essential steps towards achieving lasting peace.
Addressing misconceptions surrounding groups like Hezbollah, Minister Albusaidi cautioned against oversimplified categorizations of “bad” and “good” actors in the region. He highlighted the complexity of the situation and stressed the importance of engaging with all parties, irrespective of their ideological differences, to effectively address the catastrophe in Palestine.
Minister Albusaidi urged the international community to confront the reality of the current situation and take decisive action. He emphasized the necessity of dealing with the existing realities, including engaging with groups like Hamas, to advance towards a viable solution.
Acknowledging Oman’s role as a facilitator of peace initiatives in the region, Minister Albusaidi clarified that Oman does not sit in judgment but rather serves as a mediator, advocating for dialogue and understanding among conflicting parties.
