  • Severe heatwave in Northern India prompts IMD red alerts.

As temperatures soar across Northern India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Delhi and its neighboring states due to severe heatwave conditions. Parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Chandigarh-Delhi region are expected to experience heatwave to severe heatwave conditions. Additionally, isolated areas in Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Jharkhand are also likely to face intense heat.

The national capital woke up to a sweltering 34.8 degrees Celsius this morning, with temperatures expected to rise further. Ayanagar in Delhi recorded a scorching 46.4 degrees Celsius on Monday, underscoring the severity of the heatwave.

IMD scientists attribute the prolonged heatwave to a western disturbance expected to affect Bihar and Jharkhand by June 18 or 19. This weather system, combined with south-westerly winds from the Arabian Sea, may bring some relief to Punjab and Haryana from the oppressive heat.

Unexpectedly, Himachal Pradesh, known for its cool climate, is also grappling with intense heat. The IMD has issued an orange alert for certain regions, indicating severe heatwave conditions. “Parts of Himachal Pradesh, including Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, and Sirmaur, have reported severe heatwaves. We anticipate these conditions to persist for the next two days,” stated Hemraj Verma, an IMD scientist in the region.

The escalating temperatures have raised concerns among tourists seeking refuge in the hills, with Shimla registering its highest temperature of the season at 30.6 degrees Celsius on June 13.

Meanwhile, IMD forecasts predict extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm over Northeast India in the coming days, particularly in Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur. Despite this, North India is expected to continue experiencing heatwave conditions.

As the heatwaves persist across the Northern India, authorities have issued red alerts for Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, highlighting the urgency of preventive measures. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for Madhya Pradesh due to potential thunderstorm-related activities.
