In a significant political development from India’s Northeast, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, along with key political leaders from Assam, Tripura, and Nagaland, announced the formation of a new regional political party with the stated objective of protecting the rights and interests of the indigenous people of the region. The party, which is yet to be named, is envisioned as a unified platform that seeks to consolidate regional voices and address long-standing issues concerning identity, land rights, and development in the Northeast. The leaders, including Sangma, TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Manikya, former BJP spokesperson Mmhonlumo Kikon, and People’s Party Assam leader Daniel Langthasa, made the announcement in New Delhi on Monday, emphasizing unity, inclusivity, and the protection of indigenous rights as the party’s core philosophy.

Leaders from Northeast join hands for indigenous rights

Addressing the media, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma described the new political initiative as a historic step toward creating a collective voice for the people of the region. “We have formed a joint committee to define the structure, constitution, and symbol of the new party. The details will be finalized and announced within the next 45 days,” Sangma said. He clarified that the objective was not to challenge any existing political entity but to build a unified platform that represents the real aspirations of the Northeast. “We are not here to fight anyone. Our purpose is to fight for the interests of our people. This party will be born out of the shared commitment to protect indigenous identity and rights,” he added.

Sangma also revealed that the process would eventually lead to the merger of their respective political outfits into one unified entity. “Our parties will come together to form one political body at the right time,” he noted, adding that the movement’s strength lies in its unity. He further stated that the proposed party will not align itself with any major national party such as the BJP or Congress, but will contest elections independently to serve as an authentic voice of the region.

According to Sangma, the primary issues that the new political party intends to raise include safeguarding the land and constitutional rights of the indigenous communities. He emphasized that these rights form the foundation of the region’s social and cultural identity. “The protection of land rights and preservation of indigenous heritage are our key priorities,” he said, while urging like-minded people and regional leaders to join hands in strengthening this collective initiative.

TIPRA Motha leader Pradyot Manikya, who played a central role in shaping this alliance, explained the rationale behind the formation of the new political entity. He stated that despite the presence of several regional parties in the Northeast, there has been a lack of cohesion and unified representation at the national level. “We realized that our voices often get fragmented when we speak from different platforms. A united front will ensure that the concerns of the Northeast cannot be ignored anymore,” Manikya said.

He argued that a single regional force could bring the central government’s attention to the region’s issues more effectively. “We want to speak for our people with conviction and unity. We may have differences in approach, but we share the same purpose—to protect our rights and dignity,” he said. “We are not here to wage political battles against anyone but to fight for justice for our people.”

Manikya also stated that the new party would serve as a moral and political platform that speaks out against constitutional violations and human rights abuses both within India and beyond. “We will raise our voice against any injustice—whether it is atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh or violations of rights within India. Our aim is not to be against anyone but to stand in favor of those who cannot speak for themselves,” he said.

Unity, inclusivity, and regional pride at the core of new initiative

The joint statement released by the leaders highlighted the shared vision of the new party. It emphasized the need for regional solidarity and collective representation in national politics. “For too long, we, the younger generation of Northeast leaders, have spoken about the same issues from different platforms. It is time we give our people one collective voice. We draw inspiration from the vision and legacy of the leaders who fought selflessly for the identity and development of our land,” the statement said.

The leaders also underlined the importance of creating a political environment rooted in inclusivity, where issues of indigenous land ownership, cultural preservation, and social welfare are prioritized over partisan politics. “Our ideology is simple—people first,” Manikya declared. “We believe that our strength lies in unity and that our core philosophy should be centered around the protection of indigenous communities and their rights.”

Both Sangma and Manikya spoke about the growing concerns surrounding illegal immigration, which they said threatens to alter the demographic balance of the region. They stressed that the new party will focus on ensuring legal safeguards for local communities and upholding traditional land ownership systems. “Illegal immigration has long been one of the most pressing concerns of the Northeast. We must protect our lands, cultures, and languages. The new party will be committed to addressing these issues without bias,” Sangma said.

Mmhonlumo Kikon from Nagaland, who joined hands with Sangma and Manikya in the new venture, stated that this political development marks a turning point for the Northeast. “Our region has often been seen through the lens of conflict and fragmentation. It’s time to change that narrative. This new party is about hope, unity, and self-determination,” Kikon remarked. He added that the collective would soon initiate outreach programs in other Northeastern states to build momentum and include more regional voices.

Daniel Langthasa, representing the People’s Party Assam, echoed similar sentiments, saying that the creation of the new political platform would ensure that the Northeast speaks “in one voice.” “This is not just a political movement but a social awakening. For too long, our concerns have been overshadowed by national politics. It’s time we define our future ourselves,” he said.

The leaders made it clear that the new party would not merely be a coalition of existing outfits but an entirely new entity born out of shared vision and purpose. The joint committee will work on the constitution, organizational structure, and symbol of the party, which will be made public in the next 45 days. Discussions are also underway to include other influential leaders and community representatives from Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, and Sikkim to give the movement a broader base.

Political analysts view this development as a significant shift in the political landscape of the Northeast. Over the decades, the region has witnessed fragmented regional politics, with multiple small parties struggling to exert national influence. The proposed unification, if successful, could emerge as a powerful regional force capable of shaping national conversations around indigenous rights, resource allocation, and autonomy.

The leaders’ decision to establish a collective regional party comes at a critical juncture, with Assam scheduled to hold assembly elections in 2026, followed by Meghalaya, Tripura, and Nagaland in 2028. The new political platform aims to prepare for these elections by consolidating regional aspirations into one powerful voice.

In their joint vision statement, the leaders expressed their commitment to promoting peace, progress, and inclusivity. They underscored the importance of nurturing the Northeast’s cultural diversity while ensuring that indigenous communities retain control over their resources and heritage. “Our people have waited long enough for meaningful change. This is not just about politics; it’s about shaping our destiny,” the statement said.

The new regional alliance, if it evolves into a cohesive political party, could transform the electoral dynamics of the Northeast. Its emphasis on unity, inclusivity, and self-representation marks a new chapter in the region’s quest for political identity. For the first time, leaders across states are coming together under a single banner to assert the voice of the indigenous people—strong, unified, and uncompromising in their demand for dignity and recognition.
