  • North Korea launched short-range missiles into East Sea, sparking maritime alerts.
  • South Korea and allies enhance surveillance after North Korea’s anniversary missile test.

Japan’s Ministry of Defense confirmed the launch of at least one suspected North Korean ballistic missile, prompting alerts for maritime vessels to exercise caution. On Thursday, South Korea’s military reported that North Korea had launched several short-range ballistic missiles into the waters east of the Korean Peninsula, coinciding with recent celebrations of a significant state anniversary by the nuclear-empowered North.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff observed the missiles launched from Pyongyang around 07:10 local time (2210 GMT Wednesday), targeting the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan. South Korea is currently analyzing the details of the missile launches and enhancing surveillance, in collaboration with U.S. and Japanese authorities, to prepare for potential additional launches.

This incident marks North Korea’s first notable weapons test since July 1, occurring shortly after festivities commemorating the regime’s foundation day on September 9—a date historically associated with North Korea’s missile tests and nuclear experiments, including its fifth nuclear test in 2016 and the sixth in 2017.

During a speech for the 76th founding anniversary, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed intentions to continuously expand the country’s nuclear capabilities in response to perceived threats from nuclear-armed states.

Tensions between North and South Korea have significantly deteriorated, with North Korea recently deploying 250 ballistic missile launchers along its southern border and engaging in psychological warfare by sending trash-filled balloons over the border, a retaliatory measure against South Korean propaganda efforts.

Moreover, North Korea’s military cooperation with Moscow has been under scrutiny, with speculation about potential artillery and missile shipments to Russia for use in the Ukrainian conflict, allegations both Seoul and Washington have made and Pyongyang has denied.

As regional dynamics continue to evolve, the recent missile launches follow the conclusion of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercises conducted by South Korea and the United States, exercises North Korea has historically condemned as preparations for invasion.
