Afghanistan secured a place in the Super 8 stage of the tournament by defeating Papua New Guinea (PNG) with a seven-wicket victory in Match 29. The result also led to New Zealand’s elimination from the competition.
Afghanistan, opting to bowl first, dominated PNG’s batting lineup, restricting them to a mere 95 runs in 19.5 overs. Fazalhaq Farooqi starred with the ball, taking 3 wickets for 16 runs, while Naveen ul Haq contributed with 2 wickets for just 4 runs.
In response, Afghanistan faced early setbacks losing Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran cheaply. However, Gulbadin Naib’s unbeaten 49 and Mohammad Nabi’s 16 not out steered them to victory in 15.1 overs.
This victory ensured Afghanistan’s progression to the Super 8s, while New Zealand’s campaign came to an end following a disappointing tournament start, including losses to Afghanistan and West Indies.
The Kiwis, led by Kane Williamson, now sit at the bottom of Group C with a net run rate of -2.425. They will aim to salvage pride in their remaining matches against Uganda and PNG.
PNG, struggling throughout their innings, managed only 95 runs with Kiplin Doriga top-scoring with 27 runs. Their hopes were dashed by Afghanistan’s disciplined bowling and effective run-outs.
The T20 World Cup continues with teams battling for spots in the Super 8 stage, intensifying competition in the cricketing world.
