Gyanesh Kumar and Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu have officially assumed their roles as Election Commissioners in the Election Commission of India (ECI), marking a significant moment in the nation’s electoral landscape.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar warmly welcomed the newly appointed Election Commissioners at Nirvachan Sadan, highlighting the pivotal juncture at which they join the team. With the General Elections 2024 on the horizon, the ECI is gearing up for what promises to be a dynamic and critical twelve weeks ahead. Kumar emphasized the historic significance of their appointment, underscoring the immense responsibility of conducting elections in the world’s largest democracy.
The appointment of Gyanesh Kumar and Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu was formally notified in the Gazette on March 14, 2024. Both officials hail from the 1988 batch of the Indian Administrative Service, representing the Kerala and Uttarakhand cadres respectively.
Significantly, in a swift follow-up to the assumption of their duties, the Election Commission of India wasted no time in making a significant announcement. Just hours after the new Election Commissioners took charge, the ECI released a statement declaring that the date for the General Elections 2024 would be unveiled imminently.
The official statement from the Election Commission read, “Press Conference by Election Commission to announce schedule for #GeneralElections2024 & some State Assemblies will be held at 3 pm tomorrow, Saturday, 16th March. It will be livestreamed on social media platforms of the ECI.”
