As anticipation builds for the New Delhi Marathon 2024, which doubles as a crucial qualifying event for the Paris Olympics, organizers have unveiled the route set to challenge thousands of participants on Sunday at the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Leading the charge in the men’s category is Thonakal Gopi, a trailblazer in Indian athletics, notably securing India’s first gold medal at the Asian Marathon Championships in 2017. Gopi, alongside Srinu Bugatha and Anish Thapa, will strive to surpass the rigorous standards set for Olympic qualification, aiming to eclipse the longstanding national record set by Shivnath Singh in 1978.

The Paris 2024 Olympic marathon qualifying times, set at 2:08:10 for men and 2:26:50 for women, demand peak performance from athletes. With the qualification window closing on May 5, contenders must showcase their prowess on the renowned New Delhi Marathon course.

In the women’s field, Nirmaben Thakor Bharatjee will spearhead the competition after an impressive showing at the Mumbai Marathon, clocking a personal best. Eyes are set on breaking O. P. Jaisha’s national record of 2:34:43 set at the 2015 World Athletics Championships.

Recognized by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) as a national event, the New Delhi Marathon 2024 is set to attract over 19,000 participants from diverse backgrounds. Enthusiasts from 289 cities, 27 states, and 19 countries will converge to test their mettle across four challenging events.

The marathon route promises a scenic journey through the heart of New Delhi, commencing at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and weaving through iconic landmarks such as Lodhi Garden, Khan Market, Delhi Golf Club, Humayun’s Tomb, and India Gate. Participants will traverse a two-loop course for the full marathon and a single loop for the half marathon, showcasing their endurance and determination.

With athletes and enthusiasts gearing up for the ultimate test of physical and mental resilience, the New Delhi Marathon 2024 is poised to be a spectacle of sporting excellence, camaraderie, and unwavering spirit.
