  • New Delhi's summers projected to be 4.5°C hotter in 60 years.
  • Cities worldwide face up to 5.4°C warmer temperatures by 2080.

A newly developed interactive map by the University of Maryland has painted a sobering picture of future climate scenarios for cities across the globe. Named ‘Future Urban Planets’ and created by spatial ecologist Matthew Fitzpatrick, the map utilizes extensive data to forecast how climate change will reshape urban environments by the year 2080.

According to Fitzpatrick, the map’s projections indicate a significant shift in climate patterns, pushing cities closer to the equator over the next six decades. This transformation is driven by rising global temperatures exacerbated by human activities, particularly the emission of greenhouse gases.

The map covers over 40,000 locations worldwide, detailing expected changes in temperature and precipitation for each city. For instance, New Delhi is forecasted to experience scorching summers, with temperatures soaring by 4.5 degrees Celsius by 2080, accompanied by a 1.4% decrease in rainfall. Winters in the Indian capital are expected to warm up by 4.9 degrees Celsius.

In Mumbai, summers could become 3.4 degrees Celsius hotter and 7.4% wetter, while winters might see a 4.5-degree Celsius rise in temperature and a 5.8% increase in precipitation.

The implications extend beyond India, affecting global cities in diverse ways. Srinagar, known for its winter charm, may witness a dramatic temperature increase of 5.4 degrees Celsius by 2080, making it less appealing as a cold weather destination.

Even cities in the United States are not immune. New York is projected to resemble northern Mississippi in terms of climate, while Washington DC could experience conditions akin to present-day North Louisiana, with temperatures potentially rising by 6 degrees Celsius.

These alarming forecasts underscore the urgent need for global action to mitigate climate change and its far-reaching consequences on ecosystems, agriculture, water resources, and human health. As cities brace for increasingly severe heatwaves, storms, droughts, and floods, adaptation strategies become crucial to safeguarding urban resilience and sustainability in the face of a rapidly warming planet.

The ‘Future Urban Planets’ map serves as a stark reminder of the profound impact of climate change and the imperative for coordinated efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions and foster climate resilience worldwide.
