Uri Berliner, a senior editor at National Public Radio (NPR) in the United States, has resigned after levelling accusations of liberal bias against the broadcaster, sparking a contentious debate over journalistic standards.

Uri Berliner announced his resignation on Wednesday, just over a week after he penned an essay criticizing NPR for what he perceived as a fixation on race and identity, as well as a lack of “viewpoint diversity.” In his resignation letter, Berliner expressed respect for NPR as an institution but cited an inability to continue working in an environment where he felt disparaged by the new CEO’s alleged divisive views.

The essay, published in The Free Press, led NPR to suspend Berliner for five days without pay. Uri Berliner argued that NPR’s coverage had eroded public trust by presenting a progressive slant on major news stories, including the COVID-19 pandemic and allegations of collusion between Donald Trump and Russia.

Uri Berliner highlighted what he described as a pattern of stories focusing on issues such as racism, transphobia, climate change, and criticism of Republican policies, while also noting an apparent lack of ideological diversity among NPR staff.

The essay prompted backlash from NPR employees, including CEO Katherine Maher, who defended the network’s commitment to journalistic integrity and criticized Berliner’s assertions. Maher emphasized the importance of questioning NPR’s adherence to its mission but condemned baseless attacks on staff integrity based solely on their identities.

Uri Berliner’s resignation underscores ongoing debates within the media industry regarding objectivity, diversity, and editorial standards, particularly in the context of political polarization and ideological scrutiny.
