Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt is set to embark on an official visit to Accra, Ghana, from December 05 to 06, 2023, to participate in the United Nations (UN) Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting. The Department of Peace Operations, UN, and the Republic of Ghana will jointly host this crucial gathering.
The UN Peacekeeping Ministerial meeting aims to address the pressing security and operational challenges faced by UN peacekeepers deployed around the world, with a specific focus on issues such as the protection of civilians, strategic communications (including addressing mis-disinformation and hate speech), safety and security, the mental health of peacekeepers, and the role of women in peacekeeping, as outlined in the Concept Note.
India has consistently played a leading role in supporting these missions by deploying a significant number of troops and providing essential equipment. With missions facing greater challenges than ever, this meeting will provide a platform for Member States to consider critical issues such as the generation of high-performing and specialized capabilities, pledges to meet UN needs, and new or expanded sustainable capacity-building, training, and equipping partnerships in key areas.
During his stay in Accra, the Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt will not only participate in these discussions but also engage in bilateral meetings with Ministers from participating member countries and discuss defence cooperation matters to further strengthen the engagements.
Additionally, the MoS for Defence will also take the opportunity to connect with the Indian community residing in Accra, fostering a sense of camaraderie and solidarity.
