Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu has staged an impressive return to competitive weightlifting, despite facing her lowest performance in years at the recent World Cup. Competing for the first time since her challenging injury breakdown at the Asian Games, Chanu finished 12th at the IWF World Cup with a total effort of 184kg (81kg snatch and 103kg clean and jerk). This performance, achieved after just one month of training, highlights Chanu’s resilience and determination as she prepares for the upcoming Paris Olympics.
Expressing her satisfaction with her comeback, Chanu emphasized her confidence in her recovery process and her eagerness to compete once again. Despite missing out on a medal at the 2022 Asian Games and battling hip tendonitis, Chanu remained focused on her goal, relying on her perseverance and the support of her loved ones.
Looking ahead to the Paris Olympics, Chanu’s coach, Vijay Sharma, outlined ambitious plans for her performance, aiming for a total lift of 205kg or more. With only four months remaining until the Games, Chanu’s inspirational journey serves as a testament to her determination and resilience in the face of adversity.
Chanu’s remarkable comeback story resonates with India’s sporting history, as she aims to join the ranks of wrestlers Sushil Kumar and shuttler PV Sindhu as back-to-back Olympic medalists in individual sports. With competition intensifying, Chanu and her team are focused on perfecting their training regimen to achieve success on the global stage once again.
