Former New Zealand cricketer Mike Hesson has defended Virat Kohli amidst recent scrutiny over the Indian batter’s declining numbers in Test cricket. Mike Hesson believes that Virat Kohli is now at a stage in his career where he is more focused on winning games for India than chasing personal records. According to Mike Hesson, this makes Virat Kohli even more dangerous, particularly for a team like Australia, as India prepares for a five-match Test series starting on November 22.

Mike Hesson dismissed concerns about Virat Kohli’s recent form, especially in the context of the highly competitive Fab Four race. Virat Kohli has only managed to score two Test centuries since 2019, a statistic that has raised eyebrows among fans and experts. Despite these numbers, Mike Hesson feels Virat Kohli’s focus has shifted to contributing to team victories rather than individual accolades. “Virat Kohli is at that stage in his career where he just wants to win games for India,” Mike Hesson stated in an interview with Jio Cinema.

Mike Hesson highlighted that Virat Kohli’s mindset shift could be pivotal for India, particularly in the upcoming series against Australia. He noted that Virat Kohli’s ability to pace an innings and control the game during crucial periods, such as between the 30th and 60th overs, will be vital. “If Virat Kohli is batting at that point, he won’t let the game drift. It’s about finding gaps, hitting ones and twos, and counterattacking when needed,” Mike Hesson explained.

Virat Kohli’s recent performances in the Test series against Bangladesh saw him score 6 and 17 in the first Test. However, he showcased glimpses of his brilliance with a fluent 47 from just 35 balls, followed by an unbeaten 29. These performances, though not high-scoring, were encouraging signs of Virat Kohli’s return to form. Mike Hesson believes that Australia, a country where Virat Kohli has thrived since his debut in 2012, will be a perfect stage for the Indian batter to make a remarkable comeback.

Virat Kohli has a stellar record against Australia in Test matches. In 25 matches, he has amassed 2042 runs at an average of 47.48, including eight centuries. Mike Hesson also stressed Virat Kohli’s leadership role as a senior player, saying that his experience will be crucial for guiding younger players making their first tour to Australia. “He knows the conditions very well and will be vital in helping younger players adjust and challenge the Australians,” Mike Hesson concluded.

As the highly anticipated India-Australia Test series approaches, all eyes will be on Virat Kohli, not just for his own performance, but for his role in shaping India’s success down under.
