Former US First Lady Melania Trump has expressed her commitment to “safeguard the heart of our republic” following her husband, Donald Trump’s, landmark victory in the November 5 US presidential election. This victory has made Donald Trump, at 78, the oldest man ever elected to the office of President and the first former president to return to the White House in over 130 years.
Despite a fiercely contested election with polls indicating a close race, Trump comfortably defeated his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris. The result marked a significant political shift and gave Trump a second term in office after he previously served from 2017 to 2021.
Melania Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday night to thank the American people for their overwhelming support, acknowledging the responsibility placed upon her husband to lead the nation for another four years. “A majority of Americans have entrusted us with this important responsibility,” she said, adding, “We will safeguard the heart of our republic – freedom.”
In her statement, Melania spoke of the importance of unity, encouraging citizens to rise above political ideology for the sake of “individual liberty, economic prosperity, and security.” She also expressed confidence in America’s future, stating, “American energy, skill, and initiative will bring together our best minds to propel our nation forward forevermore.”
The victory speech took place just hours before the official results were confirmed, at a Florida convention centre where Melania stood beside her husband. After sharing a heartfelt hug and kiss, Donald Trump praised Melania for her dedication during the campaign, referring to her as his “beautiful wife” and commending her for the “great job” she had done. He also spoke emotionally about his late mother-in-law, stating that she would have been “very proud” of their accomplishments.
Earlier in the day, as the votes were being counted, Melania had shared a poignant moment on social media, posting an image of their 18-year-old son, Barron, casting his ballot for his father. She captioned the photo, “Voted for the first time – for his dad!”
Trump’s victory was cemented after securing crucial swing states, including Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia, and North Carolina, with projections indicating a clean sweep of all seven key battlegrounds. While the vote count continues in Nevada and Arizona, Trump appears poised for a historic popular vote victory, which eluded him in the 2016 election.
Meanwhile, Kamala Harris, who conceded defeat on Wednesday evening, offered her congratulations to Trump, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful transfer of power. In her address, the outgoing vice president made a veiled reference to Trump’s refusal to vacate the White House after his loss in 2020, highlighting the smooth transition of leadership in 2024.
As the country prepares for the upcoming term under Trump’s leadership, the political landscape has been marked by significant shifts in voter sentiment, particularly in swing states, setting the stage for a new chapter in American governance.
