The Ancient Sassi of Matera

Matera, located in southern Italy, is renowned for its Sassi district, a network of ancient cave dwellings carved into a steep ravine. First occupied in the Paleolithic Age, these caves were expanded over time by peasants and artisans. In recent years, the Sassi has undergone a renaissance, transforming into a unique tourist destination with cave hotels and residences, blending historical architecture with modern comforts.

From National Disgrace to Cultural Pride

In the 1950s, Matera was known as “the shame of Italy” due to extreme poverty and unsanitary living conditions in the Sassi. The entire population was relocated to new housing projects, leaving the Sassi deserted. The transformation began with Carlo Levi’s memoir “Christ Stopped at Eboli,” which depicted the harsh realities of life in the Sassi. This led to national outrage and a push towards relocating the inhabitants to more modern accommodations.

A Cultural Renaissance Led by Local Youth

In the late 1950s, Materan students, inspired by their city’s rich history, founded the Circolo la Scaletta to preserve Matera’s past. They explored the Sassi, finding that its architecture, including numerous rupestrian churches with Byzantine frescoes, could be salvaged. This group played a crucial role in changing perceptions of the Sassi, highlighting its potential rather than its past struggles.

Culinary and Cultural Revival

Today, Matera boasts a vibrant culinary scene, with cave restaurants offering modern interpretations of traditional peasant cuisine. Dishes like orecchiette pasta with broccoli rabe and maiale nero salami reflect the region’s culinary heritage. This culinary renaissance is part of the broader effort to preserve and celebrate the unique culture and history of the Sassi.

The Future of Matera

The initial preservation efforts by Circolo la Scaletta’s pioneers are now being continued by a new generation of Italian preservationists. Their focus is on developing the Sassi as a living community, integrating modern amenities while maintaining its historical essence. The challenge remains to balance the area’s growth as a tourist destination with the needs and lifestyles of local residents.

Matera’s journey from ancient cave dwellings to a modern cultural hub is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of its people and heritage.
