West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee taunted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his recent remark about being sent by the “Parmatma for a purpose.” Addressing a rally in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee asserted that deities should refrain from engaging in politics or inciting riots. She sarcastically suggested that if PM Narendra Modi considers himself a divine figure, a temple should be constructed for him where he can be worshipped, thus sparing the nation from his interference.
“One says he (PM Modi) is the God of the gods… one leader says Lord Jagannath is his devotee… if he is God, then God should not do politics. God should not instigate riots. We will build a temple for him and worship him there, offer prasad, flowers, and if he wishes, we will also offer him dhokla,” Mamata Banerjee said mockingly.
The Bengal Chief Minister’s comments follow PM Modi’s interview with a news channel where he reportedly claimed to be divinely sent rather than biological. Additionally, BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Puri, Sambit Patra, recently stated that Lord Jagannath was a “bhakt of Modi,” for which he later apologized, calling it a slip of the tongue.
Continuing her critique of the Prime Minister, Mamata Banerjee stated, “I have worked with many Prime Ministers, such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was very fond of me. I worked with Manmohan Singh, Rajiv Gandhi, Narasimha Rao, Deve Gowda… I have never encountered anyone like him. Such a Prime Minister is not needed.”
Both Mamata Banerjee and PM Modi conducted significant roadshows in Kolkata on Tuesday ahead of the final phase of voting on June 1. The Trinamool Congress leader led two roadshows in north and south Kolkata, walking nearly nine kilometers.
