West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s unexpected meeting with Rajya Sabha member Ananta Maharaj has set off a flurry of political speculation, particularly regarding potential shifts in party allegiances and electoral strategies in the state.
Mamata Banerjee, during her visit to north Bengal’s Cooch Behar, made a significant stop to meet Ananta Maharaj following her prayers at the revered Madanmohan Mandir. Known for his influence among the Rajbongshi community, Ananta Maharaj’s role in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections was pivotal, mobilizing substantial Rajbongshi support for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, sources indicate that Ananta Maharaj had voiced criticisms of the BJP prior to recent polls and signaled openness towards the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The timing of Mamata Banerjee’s visit, shortly after the elections, underscores the strategic importance of the Rajbongshi vote, comprising about 40% of the electorate in the Cooch Behar Lok Sabha constituency and holding sway over numerous seats across north Bengal.
TMC insiders suggest that Haradhan Das, a close associate of Ananta Maharaj currently aligned with the BJP, may contest the upcoming Sitai assembly bypoll on a TMC ticket. This development follows the vacancy created by MLA Jagdip Basunia’s elevation to the Lok Sabha, defeating BJP’s Nisith Pramanik.
Ananta Maharaj, who had previously enjoyed strong ties with the BJP, including support for his Rajya Sabha candidacy, has reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s treatment of Rajbongshis. While local BJP leaders have privately expressed discontent over the Mamata-Maharaj meeting, they are cautious about openly opposing him due to his significant influence within the community.
Ananta Maharaj has downplayed the meeting with Mamata Banerjee as a courtesy visit, yet political analysts view it as a potential precursor to shifts in Bengal’s political landscape. Should Ananta Maharaj’s aide secure a TMC candidacy, it could prompt the BJP to reassess its relationship with the influential Rajya Sabha member.
The outcome of these developments remains crucial as Bengal prepares for upcoming electoral battles, with implications for party alignments and community dynamics in the region.
