In a significant administrative shake-up in Jammu and Kashmir, the Union Territory has witnessed a major transfer of over 200 civil and police officers. The reshuffle comes just as the Election Commission is anticipated to announce the schedule for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections.
On Independence Day, the administration executed a sweeping transfer of 88 IAS (Indian Administrative Services) and KAS (Kashmir Administrative Services) officers across various departments. In a follow-up move, an additional 33 officers, including those holding ranks from Inspector General (IG) to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), were also reassigned. This includes the IG of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) and the Range Deputy Inspector General, among others.
Sources within the administration have indicated that a further list of transfers is expected to be released within the next few hours. Notable changes include the transfer of IAS officer Abhishek Sharma, who has moved from Deputy Commissioner of Samba to Deputy Commissioner of Rajouri. Similarly, Vikas Kundal, the current Managing Director of Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited, has been appointed as the Deputy Commissioner of Poonch.
The massive reshuffle has sparked controversy, with Jammu and Kashmir’s National Conference leader, Omar Abdullah, accusing Lt Governor Manoj Sinha of having a “biased intent.” Abdullah has called on the Election Commission to scrutinize the transfer orders to ensure the fairness of the upcoming elections. On his official X handle, Abdullah criticized the timing of the reshuffle, suggesting that it undermines the integrity of the electoral process.
Abdullah’s concerns reflect broader apprehensions about the administration’s motives and the potential impact of these changes on the election’s transparency and fairness. As the Election Commission prepares to announce the poll schedule, the reshuffle has intensified scrutiny and debate about its implications for the electoral landscape in Jammu and Kashmir.
