Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has strongly emphasized that the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata transcends political divides, asserting that there is no distinction between “us” and “them” when it comes to seeking justice. Her remarks come amid escalating protests and calls for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the handling of the case.
In a poignant statement on X, Mahua Moitra underscored the collective outrage and grief over the incident, stating, “All of us bleed for our 31-year-old daughter who was raped by this animal. There is no ‘us’ & no ‘them’. Everybody wants a speedy trial and justice. Let’s get this straight.” She also addressed misinformation surrounding the case, dismissing false reports about the victim’s injuries and urging the public to refrain from spreading fake news.
The investigation, now under the jurisdiction of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has clarified that the victim was not gang-raped, countering earlier rumors. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10, the day after the semi-naked body of the doctor was discovered in a seminar hall at RG Kar Hospital. The CBI’s findings indicate that Roy acted alone, and the detailed autopsy report refutes earlier claims of fractures in the victim’s body.
Mahua Moitra’s comments also extended to criticism of the Maharashtra government for delays in lodging an FIR in a separate sexual assault case involving two kindergarten girls in Badlapur.
The Supreme Court has scrutinized the Bengal government and RG Kar Hospital authorities for procedural lapses, including the delayed registration of the FIR and the handling of the body. The court has also criticized the state government for failing to prevent vandalism at the hospital.
Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who resigned as principal of RG Kar Hospital amid the scandal, has faced additional scrutiny and legal challenges, including accusations of financial irregularities and a polygraph test by the CBI. The investigation into Roy’s actions is ongoing, with the CBI conducting a polygraph test on him as well.
The case continues to spark nationwide outrage and has highlighted serious concerns about the safety of women in medical and other professional environments.
