India’s Maheshwari Chauhan clinched a quota spot for the Paris 2024 Olympics in the women’s skeet event at the ISSF Final Olympic Shotgun Qualification Championship held in Doha, Qatar. Her achievement marks India’s 21st shooting quota for the upcoming Summer Games in Paris and the fifth in shotgun events.
Maheshwari Chauhan secured the quota by finishing second in the women’s skeet event in Doha, with Francisca Crovetto Chadid of Chile claiming the top spot after a closely contested shoot-off. Despite tying with Chadid at 54 points, Maheshwari Chauhan narrowly missed out on the top position in the shoot-off, which ended 4-3 in favor of the Chilean shooter.
This accomplishment adds to India’s growing list of Olympic quotas in shooting, with Maheshwari Chauhan joining Bhowneesh Mendiratta, Rajeshwari Kumari, Raiza Dhillon, and Anantjeet Singh Naruka as the country’s representatives in shotgun events for the Paris Olympics.
Maheshwari Chauhan’s stellar performance also ensures that India can field a full complement of two shooters in the women’s skeet event at the Paris Games.
Despite Maheshwari Chauhan’s success, Indian shooters faced mixed fortunes at the Doha meet, with trap shooters failing to secure additional quotas for the country. However, India’s overall performance in shooting has been remarkable, with the nation securing 21 out of 24 possible quotas across rifle, pistol, and shotgun events for the Paris Olympics, marking a historic achievement for Indian shooting sports.
In the men’s skeet event, none of the Indian shooters managed to advance beyond the qualifying round, with Tokyo Olympian Mairaj Ahmad Khan leading the Indian contingent but falling short of qualification for the final.
Maheshwari Chauhan’s journey to securing the Olympic quota was marked by a national record score of 121 in the qualifiers, propelling her to the final round where she secured her berth for the Paris Games.
While Maheshwari Chauhan’s accomplishment is a cause for celebration, Indian shooters are now focused on further success at the Paris Olympics, aiming to make their mark on the world stage.
