From Classroom to Career: How One Graphic Design Course Helped Pave the Future for Student Startup Business
In the College of Design at Iowa State University, senior graphic design student Ella Janssen transformed a lifelong passion for creativity into a thriving business thanks to a hands-on, industry-connected course. Taught by Patrick Finley, professor in charge of innovation and entrepreneurship, the practicum immerses students in real-world challenges—complete with real clients, deadlines and professional expectations.
During a semester focused on beverage and consumer products, students collaborated with the Midwest Grape and Wine Industry Institute, contributing branding and label designs for Iowa State’s Brew Lab and Cidery. Industry leaders from nationally recognized brands like Samuel Adams and Angry Orchard also shared insights, giving students direct access to professional perspectives rarely found in traditional classrooms.
