The Korean Cultural Centre India (KCCI) hosted a ‘Kimchi Making Experience Event’ on Wednesday to commemorate ‘Kimchi’ Day, a day dedicated to the traditional Korean delicacy of salted and fermented vegetables. The event, held from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm, provided an in-depth look into the ‘Kimjang’ culture, a practice recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Participants had the opportunity to engage in a hands-on workshop and learn the art of making Kimchi.
November 22, designated as ‘Kimchi Day’ by the Korean Government, celebrates this staple of Korean cuisine, often made with napa cabbage or Korean radish. The event witnessed active participation from twenty members of the UN Women’s Association, who had the chance to prepare their own Kimchi.
Hwang Ilyong, the director of KCCI, remarked during the event, “In light of the growing interest in Korean culture and cuisine in India, particularly in Kimchi, we organized this event to highlight Kimchi’s cultural significance globally. We’ve received numerous requests for Kimchi-making workshops across India. This event, aligned with UNESCO’s recognition of Korea’s ‘Kimjang’ culture, aims to foster community spirit and shared experiences.”
Anne Mburu-de Wagt, Chair of the United Nations Women Association, expressed appreciation to KCCI for the invitation and celebration of UNESCO Designated Kimchi Day. “This event served as an introduction to Kimchi making for many of us. We eagerly anticipate enjoying and benefiting from this time-honored cuisine. We look forward to further exploring Korean traditions and ongoing collaboration,” she stated.
Special thanks were extended to Kimchi Making Certified Chef Mrs. Sindy Cho for leading the workshop and coordinating the event, as well as to Chef Sumi for her valuable insights.
The workshop at KCCI was a thoroughly enjoyable and educational experience for all attendees, blending cultural learning with culinary practice.
