North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s influential sister, Kim Yo Jong, sharply criticized South Korea on Monday for conducting recent military exercises near the border, accusing Seoul of provocative actions that could lead to catastrophic consequences.
In response to South Korea’s resumption of live-fire drills near the demilitarized zone and border islands following Pyongyang’s balloon provocations, Kim Yo Jong denounced the exercises as “an undisguised war game” and condemned them as “an inexcusable and explicit provocation.” Her statements were reported by the official Korean Central News Agency.
Describing South Korea’s actions as “suicidal hysteria,” Kim Yo Jong warned of severe repercussions, predicting that such provocations could result in “terrible disaster” for the South. She emphasized the sensitivity and risks associated with the live ammunition drills conducted by the Republic of Korea (ROK) army near the North Korean border.
Kim Yo Jong also underscored North Korea’s readiness to respond to any infringement of its sovereignty, stating that their armed forces would promptly carry out their duties without elaborating further.
Tensions between North and South Korea have escalated significantly, marked by increased military activities and strained diplomatic relations. Pyongyang has intensified weapons testing amid growing international scrutiny, particularly concerning alleged arms supply to Russia amid the Ukraine conflict, which violates international sanctions.
Earlier this year, North Korea declared Seoul as its primary adversary and has severed communication channels designed for dialogue and cooperation with the South. Recent incidents, including border crossings by North Korean soldiers, have further heightened tensions, albeit Seoul attributing these actions to operational errors.
Kim Yo Jong also criticized joint military exercises involving the United States, South Korea, and Japan, denouncing them as provocative and indicative of efforts by hostile forces to assert military dominance in the region.
The statements reflect the deepening rift between the Koreas, posing challenges to regional stability amid ongoing geopolitical maneuvers and security concerns.
